NEWPORT NEWS, VA -  Christopher Newport sophomore Eric Shulman beat two more opponents Sunday on Mary Washington's hard courts in Fredericksburg to reach Monday's semifinals of the men's Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional.

Shulman, who won twice Saturday to reach the round of 16, began Sunday morning with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph against Johns Hopkins' Will Grist.

Shulman came back in the early afternoon with a notable reversal, winning the last 10 games to overrun Carnegie Mellon's Duke Miller 7-5, 6-0.

The victories put the fourth-seeded Shulman into a repeat matchup in Monday's 9 a.m. semifinal. He'll face top-seeded David Maldow, a left-hander from Johns Hopkins.

In last year's semis, Shulman led by a set and a service break but lost in three sets.

Gian Heyer, CNU's other first-day survivor in the championship bracket, saved several match points but squandered one of his own as he lost a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 thriller to fifth-seeded Andy Hersh of Johns Hopkins in the round of 16. Hersh overcame a 4-1 deficit in the third set.

In back-draw play Sunday, CNU sophomore Tom Whaling won a pair of matches in B3 singles to reach the consolation final, which he lost 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) to Franklin and Marshall's Walker Phillips.

Whaling and freshman Kyle Tobin were semifinalists in B2 doubles, thanks to two victories Saturday, and Tobin was a semifinalist in B2 singles.
