MARTINSVILLE, Va. - The fifth-ranked CNU men's soccer team earned a spot in the USA South championship game with a 5-1 win over Averett Friday.
The Captains had a 2-1 halftime lead but then controlled the second half for the win that put them in the title game.
Brian Lybert scored first for CNU in the 18th minute with an assist to Trevor Moyer, but Samuli Markkanen evened the score for Averett in the 26th minute.
Nao Masuda scored the first of his two goals barely two minutes later, with an assist from Lybert, which put CNU ahead to stay.
Masuda added his second, again from Lybert, just 51 seconds after halftime and then assisted on a goal by Joseph O'Connell, along with John Corser, in the 80th minute.
Michael Zimmerman completed the scoring in the 86th minute with an assist to Andrew Bonorden.
The win puts CNU, now 17-2, in the 5:00 championship game against N.C. Wesleyan Saturday.
