NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport’s women’s basketball squad, fresh off its USA South Tournament Championship, will meet No. 8 York (PA) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday evening.
The Captains, 22-6, defeated Greensboro College in the USA South Championship to earn the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. It’s the 12th time CNU has advanced to the tournament and the first since 2006-2007, when Christopher Newport defeated Dickinson in the first round before falling to Mary Washington in a second round contest.
York, 25-2, lost to Mary Washington, 67-56, in the championship of the Capital Athletic Conference, received an at-large bid into the tournament. This would be just the second time these two teams have met. The only time the Spartans and Captains have played was in the 1991-1992 season.
In the other game at York, it will be Cabrini vs. Baruch. Game time has yet to be determined. Check CNUsports.com for more information.
