BURLINGTON, NC – Christopher Newport’s men’s tennis squad, defending USA South Tournament champions, were eliminated by Averett, 5-4, in a semifinal contest Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars won two out of the three doubles matches, to lead 2-1. Juuso Tapanainen and Dean Loock defeated Dusty Nelson and Eric Shulman (CNU) 8-4 at No. 1; Xavier Ruiz and Marcelo Diaz defeated John Braig and Lorenzo Sison (CNU) 8-4; Martin Brown and Thomas Whaling (CNU) defeated Joonas Jalkanen and Samuel Waheeb 9-7 at No. 3.
In singles, AU took the top three singles while the Captains won four through six. Tapanainen defeated Shulman (CNU) 6-2, 2-6, 6-4; Loock defeated Sison (CNU) 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2; Ruiz defeated Nelson (CNU) 6-2, 6-0; Brown defeated Diaz 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 4; Braig (CNU) defeated Jalkanen 6-3, 6-3 and Young defeated Waheeb 5-7, 6-2, retired.
Averett improves to 11-6 while Christopher Newport concludes the year 10-12.
