NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport’s track & field squad hosted the New Captains Classic Saturday.
On the men’s side, Leroy Harper, who already qualified provisionally for the 200, posted NCAA provisional qualifying times in both the 100 and 200. In the 100, he finished with a time of 10.64, the fourth fastest time in program history. In the 200, Harper finished with a time of 21.39, a provisional qualifying time, into a 1.3 m/s headwind.
On the women’s side, Dira Hansen qualified provisionally in the triple jump with a mark of 11.44 meters. Hansen also finished second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:11.54 and was also fifth in the high jump at 1.60 meters.
Christine Johnson was second in the 200 with a time of 27.77. Shannon Walker placed second in the 400 in 58.25.
Cheria Jackson finished second in the 100 hurdles in 18.61 while Christin Didlake was third with a time of 24.32. In the 400 hurdles, Brittany Jacobs was fourth with a time of 1:19.57 and Lisa Ames finished fifth in 1:21.37.
In the high jump, Didlake was fourth with a height of 1.60 meters. Didlake and Hansen are both fourth all-time in program history. Juliana Yensho finished sixth with a mark of 1.30 meters.
In the long jump, Jackson was second with a mark of 4.89 meters. Jacobs finished third with a leap of 4.77 meters, Johnson was fifth (4.64m) and Didlake (4.62m) placed sixth.
In the triple, Jacobs was fourth with a leap of 10.58 meters, Jackson finished fifth with a mark of 10.00 meters and Didlake was sixth, finishing with a mark of 9.29 meters.
Stephanie Raddatz finished second in the javelin with a toss of 27.38 meters. She’s now ninth on the school’s all-time list. Yensho was third, finishing with a mark of 25.59 meters.
Other performances of note include William & Mary’s Nicole Kazuba who set a new facility record in the pole vault, clearing 3.95 meters. Joseph Owens, running unattached and a Christopher Newport graduate, set a new facility record in the high jump, clearing 2.19 meters. He also qualified for the USATF National Championships. Jesse Doty of the Syracuse Chargers set a new facility record in the hammer with a toss of 68.39 meters. He, too, qualified for the USATF National Championships.
The Captains return to action Monday when they head to Swarthmore, PA for the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet.
