Bailey Named State Player Of The Year, Four Others Named All-State

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport’s Trae Bailey was named the Virginia Sports Information Directors College Division State Player of the Year while he and four of his teammates were named All-State.

Bailey, the USA South’s Player of the Year, hit .404 with 63 hits, 55 runs, nine home runs, and 44 RBI, all tops on the squad. He was a First Team All-USA South pick and a First Team All-South Region selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Bailey was also a First Team All-State selection in 2008.

Also earning First Team All-State honors is outfielder Mike Giarrizzi. He hit .316 with 50 hits, 44 runs, 11 doubles, one triple, one home run and 26 RBI. He also led the team in steals with 16. On the mound, the southpaw was 2-3 with a 1.61 ERA in 11 appearances. In 22.1 innings, he allowed five runs, four earned, while striking out 43. Giarrizzi was named First Team All-USA South in the outfield and as a relief pitcher.

Earning Second Team accolades were third baseman Parker Neal, designated hitter Michael Romett and pitcher Josh Brinkman.

Neal, named Honorable Mention All-USA South, tied for the team lead in hits with 63. He hit .366 with 41 runs, led the team in doubles with 14, had two triples, belted three home runs and drove in 38.

Romett, the USA South’s First Team DH, hit .343 with 46 hits, 22 runs, seven doubles, six home runs and 31 RBI.

Brinkman, an Honorable Mention All-USA South pick, finished 5-1 with a 3.82 ERA in 12 starts. He tossed 70.2 innings, allowed 67 hits and struck out 57.

Shenandoah’s Cory Nelson was named Rookie of the Year while his coach, Kevin Anderson, was named Coach of the Year.
