The 2009/2010 Christopher Newport athletic season got off to a fast start last week, and four CNU student/athletes have been honored by the USA South Athletic Conference for their impressive performances.
Cliff Kipper, a sophomore midfielder from Hayes, Virginia, was named the USA South men's soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Kipper helped lead the Captains squad to a 3-0 record last week. Kipper has scored one goal in each of CNU's contests so far. Christopher Newport defeated Randolph-Macon, 2-1, and Kipper opened up the scoring with a goal. In a 6-1 win over Bethany, it took Kipper just 54 seconds to net a score. Finally, in a 3-0 victory over Kean, Kipper tallied CNU's second goal of the match.
Caitlyn Jansen, a junior middle blocker from Lorton, Virginia, was named the Offensive Player of the Week in volleyball in the conference. Jansen compiled a .390 attack percentage while averaging 2.4 kills, 1.1 digs, 0.5 service aces and 0.4 blocks per set last week as the Captains began the season with a 4-1 record. In a 3-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan, Jansen recorded 11 kills with 13 digs, a team-high three blocks, two service aces and one assist.
Corey Lofton, a sophomore from Vienna, Virginia, was honored as the USA South cross country Runner of the Week. Lofton placed third in a dual meet with Virginia Wesleyan last week. Lofton completed the 6K course in a time of 19:09 finishing ahead of 24 other runners.
Aaron Zook, a freshman from Harrisonburg, Virginia, was also honored as the men's cross country Rookie Runner of the Week. Zook placed sixth in the dual meet with Virginia Wesleyan last and completed the 6K course in a time of 20.12.
