SALISBURY, MD – The CNU track and field program had a big first day at the Mason-Dixon Conference Outdoor Championships winning six of the eight event championships awarded during the day while three student-athletes earned provisional qualifications to the NCAA's National Meet.
The Captains jumpers had a stellar day led by junior Brittany Jacobs who set a new personal record in the long jump and set one of CNU's three NCAA provisional qualifying marks on the day. Sophomore Dira Hansen women the women's high jump and along with Cheria Jackson and Jacobs combined to give CNU second, third and fourth place finishes in the long jump.
Freshman Adrianna Carter shattered her previous personal best in the hammer throw by over 20 feet and set the second best mark in CNU history. Juliana Yensho finished fourth, Sarah Hawley seventh and Emma-Lee Gillespie tenth in the hammer throw while all three throwers set new personal bests in the event.
The Captains women's team won their third event with a strong showing from senior Elizabeth Bissell in the day's only track final, the 10,000 meter. Bissell was joined by her teammate freshman Karen Bumiller who placed second and posted a mark that is good for fifth all-time at CNU who ran the event for the first time.
CNU's mens squad had a strong first day led by senior David Woodson who followed up his NCAA provisional qualifying run in the steeplechase at the Penn Relays by winning the 10,000 meter event with the second best mark in school history and earning the Captains a championship in the only mens track event of the day.
Freshman Richard Roethel won the long jump with a new personal best and a mark that is good enough for CNU's second NCAA provisional qualification and fourth all-time at CNU. Sophomore Kwarteng Asare finished second in the long jump with a mark that was good enough for the third and final NCAA provisional qualification for the Captains. Freshman Anton Bowman was the third CNU long jumper to earn all-conference honors with a fifth place finish in the event.
Senior Chris Banks won the hammer throw and set a new CNU record. He was joined on the all-conference list by sophomore Jonathon Wade who placed fifth, set a new personal best with a mark that is #8 on the CNU all-time list.
CNU finishes day one of the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships leading both the men's and women's team standings. The event will conclude on Saturday. Please see below for complete results.
