NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Christopher Newport University men's basketball coach John Krikorian today announced the addition of ERICK MAYS to his coaching staff.
“We are extremely fortunate to add Erick Mays to our staff,” Krikorian said. “He has done a wonderful job as head coach at Menchville High School and has gained the respect of local high school and college coaches.”
Mays is a Christopher Newport University graduate, and played for the Captains in the 1993-94 and 94-95 seasons. He also began his coaching career as a student assistant coach on C.J. Woollum's staff for three years from 1996-98.
“I am excited about returning to my alma mater and having the opportunity to work with Coach Krikorian and help him realize his vision for the Christopher Newport University basketball program,” said Mays.
The Newport News native began his coaching duties at Menchville in 1999 while teaching in the Hampton City school system. Mays coached the junior varsity team in 1999 and guided that program for 5 years before taking over the varsity team in 2004.
During his tenure running the varsity program, Mays' squads were perennial contenders in the highly competitive Peninsula District and finished the 2006-07 season as Peninsula District regular season and tournament championships. Current Captains guard, Conley Taylor, was a senior at Menchville during the 2006-07 championship season when Mays was named the VA Preps Coach of the Year.
“I've known Erick for several years,” Krikorian continued. “I have always been impressed with his passion for and knowledge of the game of basketball. He will be an excellent addition to our staff."
Mays will continue teaching at Menchville and will be a part-time assistant with the Captains. Krikorian, who was named to succeed Woollum in June, is expected to complete his staff in the next two weeks.
