NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport University Director of Athletics, C.J. Woollum, has announced the Department of Athletics will introduce a new athletic brand identity beginning with the 2010-11 academic year. As part of the new brand identity, CNU athletics will be introducing new logos on a redesigned CNUsports.com, the official athletics website, as well as in all athletic publications and on all apparel.
As CNU's student-athletes continue to succeed at the highest levels of NCAA Division III athletics, it has become increasingly necessary to create an athletics brand identity that visually represents the success of Captains athletics. The new brand identity includes a comprehensive set of marks and logos that can be utilized on all athletic apparel and uniforms.
“Our student-athletes continue to win conference championships and compete in NCAA championships across the country,” said Woollum. “It is important for us, as a university and an athletic department, to provide them with a brand that they can be proud of wearing in competition, on the sidelines, on campus and in the community.”
The new brand identity was created by the Silverman Group, a marketing and advertising company that specializes in developing sports brands and marketing programs for those brands. Silverman Group works with Professional Sports Leagues and Teams, Colleges & Universities as well as National Sporting Events.
“Captain Christopher Newport is such an important figure in the history of not only CNU, but our country as well,” said Marc Jacobsen, President of the Silverman Group. “The challenge for our designers was to capture the spirit of the era that Captain Christopher Newport lived, yet bring it into a modern day translation. I think we were able to make that transition in a very significant manner.”
CNU joins the US Open Tennis Tournament, the FedEx Orange Bowl, Big East Conference and hundreds of other companies, franchises and universities who have employed the Silverman Group to create a unique brand identity. CNU will begin utilizing the new marks and logos immediately.
