Virginia Beach, Va. – The Christopher Newport University cross country teams swept a dual meet at Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday afternoon. CNU claimed the top three finishes in the women's race and three of the top five finishes in the men's race.
The Captains' women's team was paced by Laurie Murphy who won the women's race and was followed by team mates Jade Zaharoff and Dira Hansen who crossed the finish line in second and third places, respectively. The women beat Virginia Wesleyan with a collective score of 20-39 to earn the victory in their first race of the 2010 season.
The men beat the Marlins by a score of 25-32 and were led by sophomore Chris Lyford who placed second. He was joined in the top five by Ray Gamache, who placed fourth and Josh Bowling, fifth.
“They were pretty excited about how they performed today,” said head coach Patty Ley. “This race was a great starting point for both teams but there is still a ways to go for both teams to be as good as they can be.”
Both squads return to action in two weeks when they will travel to Carlisle, PA to run in the Dickinson Long/Short Invitational on Saturday, September 18th.
