Kelchner Named USA South Coach of the Year; 18 Captains All-Conference

CNU signal caller earns sixth career coaching honor

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University head coach Matt Kelchner was named the 2011 USA South Coach of the Year, headlining the conference awards for the Captains this season. CNU had 18 players named to the 2011 All-Conference Teams this season, including seven on the First Team.

Kelchner collected his second straight and sixth overall USA South Coach of the Year honor, after guiding the Captains to an undefeated season in conference play. The Captains are 8-2 overall after a perfect 7-0 season in league play, capturing the program's second outright conference title.

CNU placed seven on the All-Conference First Team, led by sophomore Markeese Stovall (RB) and senior Mike King (LB). Despite both being hindered by injury-shortened seasons, both ranked among the league's best at their position this season. Stovall led the league in yards per game (107.8) and second in rushing touchdowns with 11. King ranked fifth in the USA South in tackles per game (8.6).

Other First Team selections include a pair on the offensive line, J.T. Crews and Michael Meredith, tight end Justin Reidelbach, defensive back Derek Britt and kicker Stephen Denuel. Denuel was third in the USA South in scoring and led all kickers with 76 points, led by 15 made field goals.

Six CNU players were named to the Second Team, including a pair of dynamic rookie players. Running back Marcus Morrast and wide receiver Rudy Rudolph have combined for nine touchdowns in their first year. Rudolph had a CNU rookie record seven touchdown grabs while averaging nearly 75 yards per game through the air. Morrast piled up 484 total yards on the ground while also completing 6-of-7 pass attempts for 160 yards and a touchdown.

Joining Morrast and Rudolph on the Second Team were fullback Zack Stevens, offensive lineman Jarod Lindner, and defensive linemen Paul Bresnan and Malcom Jones.

Offensive lineman Carus Boone, defensive end Dayn Washburn, linebacker Daniel Lewis and defensive back Wayne Conner earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors, while senior fullback Miles Ailstock was pegged as the All-Sportsmanship Team selection.
