Ed Davis Joins CNU Football Staff

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Christopher Newport University Head Football Coach Matt Kelchner has completed his staff for the 2011 season. Kelchner today announced the hiring of ED DAVIS as the program's quarterbacks and special teams coach.
 
Davis, a native of Houston, Texas, arrives at CNU following a season on the staff at Dean College in Massachusetts. He previously served as an assistant coach at Rice, Texas Tech, Temple, James Madison, and Northeastern.
 
“Ed Davis brings with him a wide variety of coaching experiences at all levels of college football,” Kelchner said. “He will do a terrific job with our quarterbacks and special teams and we're very excited to have him on our staff.”
 
While an assistant at James Madison from 1999 to 2004, Davis served in various capacities including offensive coordinator and quarterbacks and wide receivers coach from 2003 to 2004.
 
Davis also held the position of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Northeastern from 2004 to 2009.
 
“It's great to be at Christopher Newport,” Davis said. “I'm really looking forward to working with Matt Kelchner and the rest of the staff here. This is a tremendous opportunity and I'm thrilled to be a part of such a successful program and university.”
 
Davis is a 1977 graduate of Texas A&M University and earned his master's from Rice University in 1984. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Rice from 1982 to 1983 before joining the staff at Texas Tech, where he coached from 1984 to 1985. He served on the staff at Temple from 1986 to 1989 and assisted at Texas State from 1989 to 1990.
 
In addition to extensive experience as an assistant, Davis has also served as a head coach. He led the varsity program at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in Houston from 1992 to 1999 and guided the squad to its first state championship in 14 years in 1994.
 
Christopher Newport is coming off another successful season in 2010 that saw the Captains win their final five regular-season games and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the 7th time in 10 years. CNU will begin its second decade of football on September 3rd at POMOCO Stadium when the Captains host Waynesburg at 1 p.m.
