CNU Track & Field Teams Announce 2012-13 Schedule

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport track & field teams will host seven meets during the 2012-13 campaign, including the indoor and outdoor Mason-Dixon Championships, as the Captains prepare for another title run.

CNU will open up the indoor season with a pair of home competitions, beginning with the Holiday Open on Saturday, December 8. Following the winter break, the squad will return home for the two-day Captains Invitational beginning on January 19. The Heptathlon and Pentathlon will kick off on Saturday morning before the other events begin on Sunday.

On the road for the next two weeks, the Captains will head to the Liberty Invitational in Lynchburg on January 25-26 before trekking to the JDL Fast-Track Invitational in Winston-Salem on February 1-2. Two weeks later, CNU will host the Mason-Dixon Indoor Championships on February 16.

Following a quick trip to the George Mason Winter Open on February 24, Christopher Newport will begin preparing for the NCAA Championships. CNU will host the Last Chance Pentathlon / Heptathlon on February 25-26 before taking part in the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet in Blacksburg on March 2.

The indoor season will conclude the following week with the Indoor National Championships on March 8-9. The title meet will take place in Naperville, Illinois.

Later in March, the outdoor track & field teams will open up their season with the VMI / Washington & Lee Carnival in Lexington, Virginia on March 22. Following the Commonwealth Duals in Newport News on March 30, CNU will head back out on the road for a pair of competitions as the team travels to the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg on April 4-6 and the Johns Hopkins Invitational on April 13.

After a brief respite, CNU will return home for the New Captains Classic on April 20-21. Following the Penn Relays later in the week, Christopher Newport will host the Mason-Dixon Outdoor Championships, which begin on May 3.

Getting ready for the National Meet, the Captains will head to the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet on May 13 before the TCNJ Last Chance competition takes place in Ewing, New Jersey on May 16. One week later, the Outdoor National Championships will kick off on May 23.

On June 19, the USATF Junior / Senior National Championships will be held in Des Moines, Iowa.

In addition to the collegiate schedule, the Captains will also host a slew of high school meets in Newport News. During the indoor season, CNU will hold the Winter Frolic on December 14-15 and the High School Showcase on January 4-5. During the outdoor campaign, the team will hold the High School Captains Classic on April 5-6. Traditionally, the high school meets attract top-flight talent from Virginia and beyond and generally feature over 50 schools and 1000 athletes.

The Christopher Newport track & field teams will look to continue their run of success after a strong campaign last year. During the 2011-12 season, both indoor squads captured the Mason-Dixon title, while the men's outdoor squad also won the crown.
