2012 CNU Football Schedule Released

Captains to Play All Five Home Games Under the Lights at POMOCO Stadium

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Christopher Newport University Director of Athletics C.J. Woollum and Head Football Coach Matt Kelchner today unveiled the 2012 CNU football schedule.

The Captains, coming off an undefeated USA South conference season last year, will open at home during Labor Day Weekend and will play all five home games in 2012 under the lights at POMOCO Stadium. CNU opens year #12 of football on Saturday, September 1st, hosting Salisbury University at 7 p.m. at POMOCO Stadium.

“Adding lights last year at POMOCO Stadium really gave our games a more exciting atmosphere,” Kelchner said. “Over the years we've enjoyed great support from our loyal fans, and last year with the lights we were ranked #7 in the country in attendance. We're very excited to play all five home games this year at night.”

The 2012 season will be the 12th since the inception of the football program at CNU, and the Captains are coming off their 8th trip to the NCAA Tournament in 11 seasons.

The Captains will play three straight road contests following the home opener. CNU will travel to Hampden-Sydney for a 1 p.m. game on September 8th for the first-ever meeting with the Tigers. The Captains then play the first non-conference game ever with Shenandoah, a program exiting the USA South for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The 7 p.m. matchup in Winchester will be played on September 15th.

CNU's three non-conference opponents in 2012 combined for a 25-9 record last year and two (Hampden-Sydney and Salisbury) won outright conference titles to advance to the NCAA Tournament.

Following a bye week, Christopher Newport will open defense of its USA South title on the road on September 29th, playing a 1 p.m. game at Maryville College (TN).

CNU's first home conference game will be played on October 6th at 7 p.m. vs. Ferrum College as the Captains host Family Weekend. It will also be a “white out” night as all fans are urged to wear white to the game.

On October 13th at 7 p.m., the Captains will take on new USA South member LaGrange (GA). It will be the first meeting ever with the Panthers.
Following road contests at Averett (October 20th at 1 p.m.) and North Carolina Wesleyan (October 27th at 1 p.m.) the Captains will finish the regular season with home games on November 3rd (Homecoming vs. Greensboro at 7 p.m.) and November 10th (Senior Night vs. Methodist at 7 p.m.) The game vs. Methodist has been designated a “blue out” game with all fans urged to wear blue to POMOCO Stadium.

The Captains football program has posted an overall record of 68-37 record over the first 11 seasons for a winning percentage of .648. CNU is 54-12 all-time in conference games for a .818 winning percentage.
