NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The Christopher Newport University women's track & field squad has earned 2012 All-Academic Team honors as selected by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The Captains were one of 137 institutions to earn the distinction, which is bestowed upon any program that posts a cumulative team GPA above 3.10. CNU was also the lone honoree from the USA South Conference.
It marks the fourth time in the past five years that CNU has earned the honor after recording a 3.15 cumulative GPA during the 2011-12 campaign.
Equally as successful on the field, CNU placed second at the Mason-Dixon Championship in the spring and sent a pair of competitors to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship. At the national meet, senior
Dira Hansen finished fifth in her heat in the 800 meters, while sophomore
Jenna Elliott earned All-American honors after placing sixth in the high jump.
In addition to the All-Academic Team honors, the USTFCCCA selected Wartburg College as the Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year, while Ursinus recorded the highest cumulative GPA after tallying a 3.71 mark.
