NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- For the second straight year, junior forward
Jalon Brown was named a first team All-Region selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), leading a contingent of three CNU players earning All-South Atlantic honors in 2013. Senior midfielder
Caleb Lewis picked up a second team nod and junior defender
Alec Faulkner earned third team honors for his second straight selection.
Just one day after all three players were named to the first team All-State team by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID), the Captains picked up another postseason honor. It was Lewis' first career selection while Brown and Faulkner captured the honor in back-to-back seasons.Â
Brown was one of just four players on the first team earning the honor for a second or third time and was one of five players from Virginia to earn the top honor. The Yorktown, Va. native was named the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Player of the Year in 2013, after leading the league in all three offensive categories. It was the second straight year that Brown earned his league's top honor, after being named the USA South Player of the Year in 2012. He finished the year with 37 total points, ranking fifth on the single season scoring chart in CNU history. He put away 14 goals and added nine assists, ranking 28th nationally in points per game.
In the midfield, Lewis was a constant presence on the outside, helping lead a potent Captains offense that averaged 2.55 goals per game. The senior had a big hand in that number, dishing out a career-high eight assists on the year and finishing the season with 18 points. He ranked third on the team in scoring and was named a first team All-Conference midfielder after posting career highs in every statistical category. He finished his career ranking in the top ten all-time at CNU in assists, with 20 helpers in his four-year tenure.Â
Rounding out the Captains' 2013 All-Region selections was third teamer
Alec Faulkner. After earning second team honors as a defender in 2012, Faulkner was asked to move into the midfield at the start of his third year. By the mid-point of the season, injuries forced the junior leader into his former post as a central defender and the Captains defense immediately reflected the change. He helped anchor a defense that allowed just 22 goals in 20 games played, posting eight shutouts with a 1.06 goals against average. His only goal of the year was the game-winning strike against Penn State Harrisburg, and he added three assists.
It is the sixth straight year that CNU has collected at least three All-Region selections according to the NSCAA. The Captains finished the year with a 13-5-2 overall record, reaching the CAC Championship Game against nationally-ranked York (Pa.).Â
