NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – In their final meet as members of the Mason-Dixon Conference, the Christopher Newport outdoor track & field teams made a resounding statement as the Captains captured both the men's and women's league championships on Saturday afternoon at POMOCO Stadium.

Taking their show to the Capital Athletic Conference beginning next year, the Captains wrapped up their stint in the Mason-Dixon with an impressive performance. Enuma Ezenwa led the way, earning Co-Track Athlete of the Meet honors. Daulton Teaford also secured titles in both the men's 100 and 200.

“The team battled really well today,” said head coach Tyler Wingard, who was honored as the Mason-Dixon Men's and Women's Coach of the Year. “We had some great performances including Daulton Teaford's double in the 100m and 200m with NCAA Div. III Top 25 times in both, Robbie Mayes' breakthrough in the 400m, and key wins from Daniel Richard (Steeplechase), Sam Martin (800m), and Joseph Taylor (PV).  Enuma Ezenwa was absolutely outstanding in her performances both on the track and in the field events. Danielle Crowley earned a great win in the Triple Jump and was part of the winning 4x100m Relay, and Kalee Hammerton won the Pole Vault in spite of being kept in a walking boot for most of the last few weeks. It was a great way to close out the regular season, for sure!”

Overall, the CNU women grabbed the championship after amassing 209.5 points. PSU-Behrend finished second with 150, while Gwynedd-Mercy was third with 76. On the men's side, the Captains took the crown with a score of 173, which out-distanced PSU-Behrend by 35.

Leading the way during the two-day meet, Ezenwa was extraordinary, snatching titles in the 100- and 400-hurdles after winning the high jump on Friday. In the 100-hurdles, she blistered the field with a time of 14.87, which marked a new PR and ranks 10th all-time at CNU. Later, she captured the 400-meter discipline in 1:06.52 before running the lead leg on the victorious 4x100-meter relay squad, which finished the event in 48.62.

In field events on Saturday, Kalee Hammerton and Danielle Crowley both walked away with conference titles as well. Hammerton won the pole vault after clearing 3.25 meters, while Crowley took the triple jump with a distance of 10.79 meters. Crowley was also the runner-up in the long jump after logging a 5.31 mark.

On the men's side, the Captains secured six conference titles, including a pair by Teaford. In the 100-meter dash, the second-year speedster ran away with a time of 10.79, which ranks eighth in program history. In the 200, he also secured the crown with a mark of 21.76.

Just as strong in the 400, Robert Mayes took the title after finishing the event in 48.63, which set a new PR and placed him eighth on Christopher Newport's all-time list. Samuel Martin also won the championship in the 800 after beating the field by a full second after crossing the line in 1:55.94. He also was the runner-up in the 1500 with a 4:00.41 clocking.

Daniel Richard grabbed a title in the 3000-meter steeplechase as well with a time of 9:56.19, while Bradley Turner, Daniel Austin, and Scott Wright also collected top-five efforts in the event to cap off a strong showing by the Captains. Joseph Taylor rounded out the victors, winning the pole vault with a height of 4.45 meters.

During other events on the men's side, Brian Strickland led the way in the hurdles, finishing third in the 400 and fourth in the 110-meter discipline. Freshman Dominique Torres pieced together an excellent effort in the triple jump as well, finishing second with a distance of 14.05 meters.

In other distance events on the men's side, Michael Hoy placed fourth in the 5000 with a time of 16:01.68, while Josh Showalter was right behind him in fifth. Brian Huffman also nabbed a top-five effort in the 1500 after finishing fourth with a time of 4:08.35.

Not to be overlooked, the CNU throwers continued their outstanding performance on Saturday. Robert Graham was the runner-up in the javelin with a toss of 48.18 meters, which ranks sixth in program history. Kendrick McMinn also placed third with a 48.10 mark, while Anthony Melton notched a second-place finish in the discus with a toss of 41.87 meters.

On the women's side, Murphy Smith came in fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put. Catherine Buchanan also came in fifth in the discus, while Taryn Langley equaled that finish in the javelin after unleashing a toss of 26.35 meters.

In other track events, Fredsal Walker anchored the victorious relay team and came through with a slew of strong individual efforts as well. She was the runner-up in the 100-hurdles, placed third in the 200-meters and 400-hurdles, and finished fourth in the 100-meter dash. She also teamed up with Jennifer Westerholm, Taylor McCord, and Karissa Love on a second-place effort in the 4x400-meter relay after the unit completed the course in 4:04.80.

In distance events, Jessica McClelland finished second in the 1500 after clocking in at 4:54.59 and fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:25.57. Julie Machamer also locked down a fourth-place finish in the 5000 following her third-place effort in the 10,000 on Friday. Erin Rolaf looked strong as well, notching a pair of top-five performances in the 1500 and 5000.

Deanna Corts also made a tremendous debut in the 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing third with a time of 12:44.34. That pace stands as the sixth-fastest in CNU history.
