NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport University finished the 2012-2013 academic year with the highest winning percentage in Virginia for non-NCAA Division I schools. It's the fifth straight year CNU has won the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-Sports College Division Survey. The announcement was made Monday by the statewide organization.
Captains teams won 76.2% of contests this year to take the title. Overall, the CNU men's and women's squads combined for a 263-81-3 mark, winning 13 conference titles and earning 11 appearances in NCAA Tournaments. The 76.2% winning percentage is the second-highest in the last 13 years of the survey, only topped by CNU when the Captains won 77.9% of their contests in 2010-11.
On the men's side, CNU won 69.6% of its games to lead the state. The Apprentice School came in second at 63.6% followed by Bridgewater College (60.9%), Washington & Lee University (60.6%) and Hampden-Sydney College (59.9%).
The CNU women's programs blistered the field, winning nearly 81% of their contests in 2012-13, going 167-40 (80.7%). Lynchburg College came in second (67.4%), followed by Marymount University (66.8%), University of Mary Washington (65.8%) and Virginia Wesleyan College (62.8%).
The survey ranks the overall winning percentage of all 28 non-NCAA Division I schools in Virginia. Lynchburg College took second place in the overall survey just edging out the Apprentice School. The Hornets won 62.7% of their contests, while the Builders won 62.6%. Rounding out the top five were the University of Mary Washington (62.1%) and Washington & Lee University (60.4%).
Trailing CNU in the conference title count was the University of Mary Washington and Washington & Lee University with seven apiece. In post-season appearances, CNU topped with 11 followed by Washington & Lee University with seven and Lynchburg College with six.
