RICHMOND, Va. -- The Touchdown Club of Richmond announced the winners of its 2014 College Football Players of the Year Awards on Wednesday, including Christopher Newport University senior
Rudy Rudolph as Co-Wide Receiver of the Year.
Rudolph shared the award with Hampden-Sydney College's Holton Walker, and both will be recognized at a banquet next week. with a total of 15 other players from around the Commonwealth winning top honors this year. The honors are divided into seven positional categories within two groups: NCAA Division I programs, and Division II, Division III, NAIA and USCAA programs.
Click here for the full release, including all 17 honored players.The Captains all-time leading receiver had a banner season to cap his illustrious career, setting nearly every single season and career mar in the CNU record book. His 1,474 receiving yards this season ranked second in the nation and are the most by any player in CNU history by nearly 300 yards. He had 76 catches, 12 more than the previous mark, and tied for the best single season in receiving touchdowns, with 10.Â
The senior from Chesapeake, Va. posted a pair of 200+ yard receiving games, ranking second and third all-time in single game performances. He also posted his second career three-touchdown performance when he hauled in three scores against Greensboro on October 25.Â
The swan song season helped Rudy climb the career charts as well, crushing the previous marks for wide receivers in CNU history. His 3,345 career yards are well over 1,300 yards more than the previous mark set by Nathan Davis (1,964) and he finished with 32 career touchdown grabs, 13 better than Davis' record of 19. He caught over 30 more passes than anyone else in CNU history, with 163, and all four seasons of his career rank in the top ten of receiving yards and receiving TDs.
Rudolph was a monster in yards per reception throughout his career, averaging over 20 Â yards per catch. Among active players he leads all of Division III, with 20.6 yards per reception, and ranks second across all NCAA divisions, trailing only Division II's Henderson State's Darius Davis by one-tenth of a yard per catch.Â
He captured second team All-Conference honors three times prior to his senior season, and garnered first team All-Conference honors this season. He is also a two-time All-State pick, with this year's honors yet to be announced.Â
The Touchdown Club of Richmond Award winners, along with the winners of the Bill Dudley Award and Willie Lanier Award, will be honored at the annual Dudley/Lanier Award Banquet.
