Final Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams put together an outstanding performance on Saturday to cap off the final day of the New Captains Classic at Pomoco Stadium.
During the afternoon, CNU posted 10 all-time performances, while the squad combined for 61 team PRs over the course of the two-day meet.
Richard Roethel also rewrote the record books, setting five facility marks during the decathlon.
In the combined event, Roethel bettered his own facility record after finishing the decathlon with 6,723 points. That showing not only marks the finest in the history of Pomoco Stadium, but it also ranks fourth in the NCAA. Incredibly, the senior won eight of the 10 disciplines, including four new facility marks.
Over the two days, Roethel set a new Pomoco decathlon record with a 6.77-meter long jump and a 4.13-meter pole vault. He also toppled the previous marks in the shot put with a 12.98-meter heave and in the discus with a 36.53-meter toss. Along with those efforts, he notched the meet's top performance in the 100, 110-hurdles, high jump, and javelin.
Brian Strickland also finished second in the decathlon with 5564 points, while
Corey Rodriguez and
Michael Sonnek placed third and fourth, respectively.
Not to be overlooked, the women also excelled during the heptathlon.
Jennifer Westerholm led the way with a first-place finish after accumulating 4,230 points, which ranks as the third-finest effort in CNU history.
Enuma Ezenwa placed second with 3,966 points, while
Noel Bartley and
Danielle Crowley each posted PRs. Bartley finished third with 3,921 points, and Crowley amassed 3,874. Those totals rank fourth and sixth in program history.
In other top performances on the women's side, the Captains continued to excel in the distance events.
Logan Harrington won the 800 with a time of 2:15.30 and placed second in the 1500 after clocking in at 4:52.13 during her debut in the event. The reigning CAC Track Athlete of the Week now stands seventh all-time at CNU in the 1500.
Jessica McClelland also finished fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:16.84, which ranks fourth in program history. In the 5000,
Julie Machamer recorded the top time after crossing the line in 18:23.68, while
Emmie Schmitt finished second in 18:45.07. With those clockings, Machamer is now fourth on the Christopher Newport's all-time performance list, while Schmitt is sixth.
In field events,
Jenna Elliott recorded the top height in the high jump after clearing 1.60-meters. During the heptathlon, Bartley also eclipsed 1.58-meters in the discipline, which places her eighth on the program's all-time list.
On the men's side,
Daniel Richard had a tremendous performance in the 3000-steeplechase. The junior won the event in 9:32.98, which ranks third in CNU history.
Nick Hedrick also locked down a third-place showing in the 800 after crossing the line in 1:58.50, while
John LaPointe captured a victory in the 5000 with a time of 15:28.61. Richard was close behind, placing second in 15:31.13.
In other victorious efforts,
Dominique Torres,
Daulton Teaford,
Robert Mayes, and
Troy Newcomer teamed up to take the 4x100 in 42.58. Torres also posted the top effort in the triple jump with a 14.08-meter leap.
