CNU Names Mike Faragalli Assistant Football Coach

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Christopher Newport University Head Football Coach Matt Kelchner today announced the hiring of Assistant Coach MIKE FARAGALLI, who will serve as CNU's Quarterbacks and Special Teams Coach. Faragalli will also assume the role of primary play-caller for the Captains offense.

"Mike brings a wealth of experience with him to CNU," Kelchner said. "He has coached at all levels of professional and collegiate football over the last thirty years, and we're very excited to have him joining our staff."

Faragalli's extensive resume includes experience as both an assistant as well as a head coach. At the collegiate level, he has served as an assistant coach at Rhode Island (1981), Wisconsin (1982), William & Mary (1983-84), Bowling Green (1991-94 and 1996-99), Lafayette (2000-07), Richmond (2008-09), Virginia (2010-12), and Virginia State (2013).

His professional stops have all come in the Canadian Football League, where his father, Joe, was also a longtime coach. Faragalli served as the offensive coordinator of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1985 and 1986, the year they won the Grey Cup as Champions of the CFL. He was also on the staffs of the Montreal Alouettes (1987) and Edmonton Eskimos (1988-90).

Faragalli became a head coach in 1995, leading the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. Born in Philadelphia, Faragalli spent much of his youth in Canada while his father coached the CFL squads in Saskatchewan, Edmonton, and Ottawa. He graduated from high school in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and then graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1980.

Faragalli was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Richmond under Head Coach Mike London when the Spiders won the National Championship in 2008 and CAA Championship in 2009. He went with London to the University of Virginia in 2010 and served as running backs coach of the Cavaliers for three seasons.

Christopher Newport is coming off another successful season in 2013 that saw the Captains finish with a mark of 8-2. CNU will open the 2014 season on Saturday, September 6th, hosting Salisbury. Kickoff time is set for 6 p.m. at POMOCO Stadium.
