Grayson Reid won the individual championship and headlined an outstanding team effort, which saw seven Captains place in the top-15, as the Christopher Newport men's cross country team claimed its first Capital Athletic Conference title on Saturday afternoon at the Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum in St. Leonard, Maryland.
Leading the championship effort, Reid was outstanding on Saturday as he became the first Captain to win an individual conference title since Ray Gamache captured the USA South crown in 2012. Guided by that performance, Christopher Newport eventually finished the meet with 26 points, which out-distanced runner-up York's total of 45.
With their well-balanced performance, the Captains became the first CAC team since Salisbury in 2010 to place seven runners in the top-16 at the league's title meet.
Headlining the day, Reid won the conference crown after posting a time of 25:20.8 in the 8k race. That effort was over five seconds faster than the next closest competitor. With his performance, Reid became just the second athlete in CAC history to earn Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman before winning the league championship as a sophomore.
In addition to Reid, two other Captains also collected top-five efforts.
Billy Rabil came in third overall with a time of 25:33.3.
Andrew Benfer was up next with a fourth-place finish after crossing the line in 25:35.1. That clocking marked a new personal-best for the junior and moved him into 13th on the program's all-time 8k list.
Just missing a top-five finish,
Daniel Read came in sixth in 25:45.4. That also established a new PR and moved him to 18th on CNU's 8k list. Rounding out the squad's top-seven,
Jeff Dover was 12th in 25:59.1,
Peyton Artz finished 14th overall and second among freshmen with a time of 26:11.0, and
Charlie Pruitt was 15th in 26:12.8.
Impressively, among the squad's five scorers, CNU posted a 38-second spread, marking the finest among all teams at the championship meet.
Christopher Newport will return to action on November 14 with the NCAA Regional Championships in Winchester, Virginia.
