CANTON, N.Y. -- All eight Captains at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships saw action on Thursday as the Christopher Newport track & field teams competed in a pair of relays, while three members also took part in individual events during the first day of the title meet at St. Lawrence's Merrick-Pinkard Track & Field Complex.
On the men's side,
Daulton Teaford placed second in his heat and eighth overall in the 200 to qualify for the finals, which will take place on Saturday at 3:55 p.m. During the prelims, the senior speedster posted a season-best time of 21.45. He will now compete in the 200 finals at the NCAA Championships for the second time in his career after placing fifth as a sophomore in 2013.
Prior to running the 200, Teaford also competed in the 4x100-relay on Thursday. During the event, he teamed with
Dominique Torres,
Jordan Roach, and
Ryan Scott on a 15th-place finish. Together, the foursome registered a time of 41.91.
On the women's side,
Jennifer Westerholm wrapped up the first day of the heptathlon in 14th after totaling 2,706 points. Two spots back,
Enuma Ezenwa currently sits 16th after the first four events with 2,673 points.
During the combined event, Westerholm matched her PR in the 100-hurdles with a time of 14.95, which was the eighth-fastest clocking at the meet. Later, she also posted a personal best in the 200 with a time of 26.46. Rounding out her first day, she added an 8.19-meter throw in the shot put and a 1.56-meter clearance in the high jump.
Also competing in the heptathlon, Ezenwa established a new PR in the shot put with a 9.42-meter effort. She also finished seventh in the 200 with a 25.92 clocking and added a 15.94 mark in the hurdles. The senior eclipsed 1.53 meters in the high jump as well.
Following their performance in the combined event, Westerholm and Ezenwa returned to the track for the prelims of the 4x400-relay. Together, the two teamed with
Leah Richardson and
Logan Harrington to post a time of 3:52.21. That mark placed them 14th at the national meet.
With the first day in the books, the Captains will have three competitors in action on Friday. Ezenwa and Westerholm will cap off the heptathlon with the final three events, while Ezenwa will also take part in the 100-hurdle prelims at 5:15 p.m. Additionally, Harrington will look to qualify for the 800 finals on Friday. Her race is slated for 6:45.
