SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Christopher Newport University freshman
McKinney Harwood was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic South Regional Rookie of the Year. The Omaha, Neb. native is the first Captain to earn the ITA's top rookie honor in program history.
Harwood played all season at No. 1 singles and doubles in dual play, and carried an individual regional ranking in singles play throughout the spring. She earned second team All-Conference honors in both singles and doubles, headlining one of the most historic years in program history. Harwood and the rest of the Captains earned the team's first ever national ranking and reached the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament finals for the first time.
Harwood finished with an 11-7 record in singles this spring, including an impressive 3-4 mark against regionally-ranked opponents as a freshman. Her marquee wins came in conference play both in the regular season and CAC semifinals, where she defeated Salisbury's Natalie Savage twice, ranked 12th in the region. Alexandra Drye won seven straight at the end of the season and finished the year 8-2 overall. Overall in doubles play, Harwood tied for the third most wins in history, with 21.
The Christopher Newport women's tennis team finished the year with at 14-6 overall mark, led by Harwood's performance on the top line. As a team, the Captains went 7-3 against regionally-ranked opponents and impressed against region opponents, going 11-1.
