CNU Women's Track & Field Team Captures Third Straight CAC Indoor Title

Final Results

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
For the third consecutive year, the Christopher Newport women's track & field team captured the Capital Athletic Conference Indoor Championship as the Captains won six individual and relay titles during an impressive performance on Sunday afternoon at the Freeman Center.

Overall, CNU collected 146 points, which out-distanced runner-up Wesley by 30. Salisbury eventually came in third with 76 points, while Mary Washington was fourth with 63. York (61), Frostburg State (24), and Penn State Harrisburg (10) rounded out the team standings.

On an individual level, Logan Harrington and Lydia Cromwell led the Captains as both standouts won a pair of individual titles. Harrington walked away with the mile and 800 crowns, while Cromwell led the way in the 3000 and 5000.

Leading a tremendous performance by the distance runners, Harrington completed the mile in 5:15.73 before taking the 800 in 2:18.50, which established a new CAC Championship Meet record. Meanwhile, Briana Stewart came in second in the mile (5:17.15) and third in the 800 (2:25.49), while Alexa Tabackman was also the third-place finisher in the mile (5:18.72).

Later, Harrington, Tabackman, Stewart, and Graciela Slyer teamed up to win the Distance Medley Relay as well. Together, the foursome posted a time of 12:40.00, which shaved six seconds off the previous CAC Championship record established by York in 2012.

Cromwell also shined with a pair of all-time efforts during the meet. She won the 5000 with a time of 18.16.20, which marked the third-fastest clocking in CNU history. Later, she finished first in the 3000 after crossing the line in 10:42.11, which moved her to sixth on the program's all-time performance list.

Along with the distance runners, Hannah Bowden brought home an individual title as the freshman won the long jump with a 5.24-meter leap. That effort set the tone for an impressive showing by the Captains in the event as Briana Sutton came in second with a 5.19-meter distance, while Jennifer Westerholm placed third with a 5.16-meter leap.

Showing off her impressive skill set, Westerholm also finished in the top-four in three other individual events. She came in second in the 60-hurdles after clocking in at 9.14 and third in the high jump after clearing 1.58 meters. Rounding out her day, she placed fourth in the triple jump with a 10.25-meter performance.

Guided by those efforts, Westerholm eventually finished as the meet's top individual scorer with 24.5 points. Harrington was second overall with 22.5, while Cromwell was fourth with 20.

Also shining in the field events, Jessica Brownell came in third in the pole vault (2.95 meters), Hannah Shoemaker finished third in the shot put (11.62 meters), and Lillie Cummings came in fifth in the weight throw with a 13.74-meter toss. That distance ranks second on Christopher Newport's all-time performance list.

With the CAC title in the books, the Captains will now set their sights on qualifying for the NCAA Championships, which will take place on March 11-12 in Grinnell, Iowa. CNU will return to action with the George Mason Winter Open in Fairfax on February 28.
