Christopher Newport Women's Hoops Selected As At-Large Participant in NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Christopher Newport women's basketball team has been selected to receive an at-large berth into the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship. The Captains will play Friday night on a neutral floor against St. Joseph's (Maine) on the campus of Muhlenberg College. Game times, ticket information and more will be announced at CNUsports.com as they are made available.

The Captains return to the NCAA Tournament for the 17th time in program history and the third time in four seasons under head coach Bill Broderick. CNU reached the NCAA Elite Eight in Broderick's first season before dancing to the Sweet 16 in his second.

It will be the first meeting ever for CNU against the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Champions, who are 23-5 coming into the Captains' first round matchup. The top-seeded Monks edged Emmanuel in the conference title game, 66-62, to earn the league's automatic bid. CNU has posted an overall record of 22-4 this season and reached the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals before picking up their second at-large berth in the last three years.

Christopher Newport won its first five games, lost two and then ran off the second longest winning streak in program history with a 17-game roll to capture the second seed in this year's CAC Tournament. Three of their four losses came to teams also selected for the 2016 NCAA Championship and the Captains also earned two victories against this year's tournament field.

The other game in the pod hosted by Muhlenberg will feature the host Mules against St. John Fisher. The winner will advance to face the winner of the CNU/St. Joseph's (Maine) contest on Saturday evening. All three games will be played at Memorial Hall in Allentown, Pa.
