Final Results
FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Christopher Newport women's track & field team locked up its third consecutive Capital Athletic Conference championship on Saturday as the Captains won six individual titles to clinch the team crown at Frostburg State's Bobcat Stadium.
Overall, CNU posted 178 points, which out-distanced runner-up Salisbury by 50. Wesley eventually came in third with 118 points, while York (Pa.) and Mary Washington rounded out the top-five.
Leading the way for the Captains,
Jennifer Westerholm and
Logan Harrington both won a pair of conference crowns. In her final league championship meet, Westerholm went out in style as the senior captured the long jump with a 5.24-meter distance before winning the 400-hurdles in 1:05.69. Meanwhile, Harrington won the 1500 in 4:53.09 and the 800 in 2:20.24.
Also winning titles on Saturday,
Jessica Brownell took the pole vault after eclipsing 3.05 meters, which equals the sixth-highest clearance in CNU history.
Lydia Cromwell also walked away with the conference crown in the 3000-steeplechase after completing the course in 11:39.61.
Briana Stewart and
Deanna Corts also scored points with top-six finishes in the steeplechase as well.
Along with her conference titles, Westerholm tied for second in the high jump after eclipsing 1.53 meters, placed third in the 100-hurdles with a time of 14.87, and finished fourth in the triple jump with a 10.77-meter distance. In other field events,
Hannah Shoemaker was the runner-up in the shot put with a 12.04-meter effort, which stands sixth on CNU's all-time performance list. She also finished third in the hammer with a 38.27-meter toss. That effort ranks ninth all-time.
Meanwhile,
Sarah Johnson came in third in the discus with a 38.26-meter toss, which places her third in program history.
Tyler Robin also scored points in both the discus and shot put, while
Briana Sutton was fourth in the javelin with a 34.76-meter heave.
Hannah Bowden and
Gabrielle Richardson also finished in the top-five in the long jump, while
Lillie Cummings was fourth in the hammer.
In addition to the titles by Harrington and Cromwell in distance events,
Emmie Schmitt was second in the 10,000 with a time of 39:29.64. That ranks third in CNU history.
Taylor Mansini also moved to eighth all-time with a 40:47.87 clocking in the event, while
Kathryn Wilson was two spots behind in fifth with a time in 43:12.66.
Alexa Tabackman and
Abigail May also joined Harrington in the top-five in the 1500, and Stewart was fifth in the 5000. Her time of 18:58.71 in the event stands 10th all-time at Christopher Newport.
In other events,
Molly McCabe shined in the hurdles as she finished second in the 100-meter discipline (14.59) and fourth in the 400- (1:08.96).
Karissa Love also came in fourth in the 100 with a time of 12.54 and fifth in the 200 in 25.75.
Hannah Bowden was fourth in the long jump and fifth in the 100-hurdles as well.
With the league title locked up, Christopher Newport will now set its sights on qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will be held in Waverly, Iowa from May 26-28. The Captains will be back in action on May 6 with the N.C. State Wolfpack Last Chance Meet in Raleigh.
