NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University men's tennis player
Arttu Fiva (Lappi, Finland) was named to the 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District At-Large Team on Thursday. The junior collects his first career recognition by CoSIDA and becomes the fifth CNU student-athlete to earn Academic All-District honors in 2015-16, setting a new record for the program.
Fiva joins David Furrow, a two-time selection, Victoria Perry, Garrett Van Nutt and Hunter Wetherell as the five Captains to earn the  distinction in 2015-16. He is also the first men's tennis player to be recognized, as he was honored by the organization on the "At-Large Team," which includes nominations for athletes from fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The Academic All-District teams include student-athletes from eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. First team Academic All-District honorees, like Fiva, advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second-, and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.Â
The CNU leader in singles wins for the second time in his career, Fiva led the Captains with 19 victories in individual play this year. He earned his third second team All-Conference honor this season, earning the league's designation at No. 5 singles. Fiva was 19-10 overall this season with a 13-8 dual record, including a 5-1 mark in CAC action. After three seasons on the court, Fiva has climbed into the top ten all-time at CNU with 53 singles victories.Â
He has been equally as impressive in the classroom, posting a 3.90 cumulative GPA while working toward a degree in Finance. He helped CNU finish second in the Capital Athletic Conference, reaching the conference championship match for the second straight year. The Captains wrapped up the 2015-16 with a 13-9 overall record and ranked 25th in the April 28 national rankings.Â
