Catie Chess, Meaghan Galvin, and Emma Walsh Collect IWLCA All-Region Accolades

GRAND LAKE, Colo. -- Catie Chess and Meaghan Galvin collected first-team All-Chesapeake Region honors, while Emma Walsh picked up second-team nods from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association after the three standouts pieced together outstanding 2016 campaigns for Christopher Newport.

With her honor, Galvin joins former standout Kaitlin Quigley as the only players in program history to earn first-team All-Region accolades three times. The junior is also the first Captain to do so in her first three seasons. Meanwhile, Walsh is only the second freshman to secure All-Region nods, while Chess also earned the award for the first time following an exceptional sophomore season.

Helping anchor the midfield unit, Chess was sensational throughout the 2016 campaign. The second-year standout ranked third on the team and ninth in the Capital Athletic Conference with 35 goals. A first-team All-League selection as well, she collected 20 ground balls and ranked second on the team with 13 caused turnovers and 27 draw controls.

During the year, Chess notched six hat-tricks, including a seven-goal outburst at Roanoke on April 1. That equaled the fourth-highest single-game total in program history. The Fairfax native also scored four goals on three occasions, including back-to-back outings to open the season. Overall, she registered at least one point in 14 of her 16 appearances, including nine multi-goal efforts.

Equally effective throughout the year, Galvin earned first-team nods following a record-breaking junior season. Honored as the 2016 CAC Co-Player of the Year, she led the conference with 82 draw controls and ranked second with 72 points. Her 82 draw controls also established a new single-season program record, while her 33 assists moved her to seventh on the program's all-time list.

During the season, Galvin registered seven hat-tricks, including three five-goal outings. A two-time CAC Player of the Week honoree, the Arlington native collected at least one point in 15 of her 16 appearances, including eight at Frostburg State on March 26 and again at Marymount on April 9. Equally dominant from the eight-meter arc, she finished second in the nation with a .737 free-position percentage.

Rounding out the honorees, Walsh was a dominant presence between the pipes. A second-team All-Conference honoree, she appeared in all 16 games and earned 15 starts while piecing together one of the finest freshman campaigns in program history. Compiling an 11-5 record in the crease, she led the CAC with a .547 save percentage and tallied an 8.36 goals-against-average, which ranks third on the program's all-time single-season list.

During the year, Walsh made at least 10 saves on seven occasions, including a season-high 17 against No. 4 Salisbury on April 5. That total ranks seventh in program history. The Marshall, Virginia native also added 14 stops and a season-high five ground balls during a 9-8 triumph over No. 10 Catholic on March 3, which earned her CAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. She also finished the season with a team-high 35 ground balls, which ranked 13th in the league and second among goalies.

Together, the three All-Region selections helped guide Christopher Newport to an 11-5 record, including a 5-3 mark in league action. The Captains also remained in the IWLCA National Rankings throughout the year and currently stand 19th in the latest poll.
