Scoop Simon Selected First Team All-America by National Fastpitch Coaches Association

SALEM, Va.- Christopher Newport senior outfielder Scoop Simon has added another honor to her impressive resume. Simon has been named first team All-America by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). The announcement was made Wednesday night at the Division III Championship Awards Banquet at the Salem Civic Center prior to the start of the eight-team national finals this weekend.

Simon, a first team all-conference player in the Capital Athletic Conference, led the Captains to a 35-9 record this season and a tenth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. She becomes just the fourth CNU player to ever achieve the first team honor, joining Dallas Slosjarik (2004), Taylor Margan (2009), and Jessie Atkinson (2009 and 2011). Simon is the 11th overall CNU softball student-athlete to receive All-American recognition.

Simon was selected first team All-Region by the NFCA, and is also one of ten finalists for the inaugural Schutt Sports/NFCA National Player of the Year award which will be handed out next week following the national championship.

The Richmond native posted outstanding numbers for CNU this season, leading the Captains in 11 different offensive categories. Simon recorded team highs in home runs (9), hits (58), runs (43), runs batted in (51), doubles (15), triples (3), total bases (106) and walks (32). She also led the squad in batting average (.450), slugging percentage (.822), and on base percentage (.570).

Simon, who started all 44 games this year for the Captains, played the last two years of her collegiate career at Christopher Newport after transferring from Randolph-Macon following her sophomore season. She was named third team all-region last season following her junior year.

The 2016 campaign ended for the Captains in the NCAA Tournament when Messiah defeated CNU twice at Captains Park to advance to the super regional round of 16. Messiah has since advanced to the National Finals in Salem along with Emory, Rowan, MIT, Illinois Wesleyan, St. John Fisher, St. Thomas, and Texas-Tyler.
