INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The seventh-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team was selected to host the first and second rounds of the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball National Championship, set to play first round games on Friday, March 3 and second round action on Saturday, March 4. The Captains will take on the College of Staten Island (22-6) in the first round, while the other matchup will feature Catholic University (23-4) and Lynchburg College (22-6). 

The Captains are 25-2 and are coming off regular and postseason championships in the Capital Athletic Conference, securing the league's automatic berth. CNU will face the Dolphins, the winners of the 2017 CUNYAC Championship. Catholic and Lynchburg each received Pool C at-large berths following appearances in the Landmark Conference and Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship Games, respectively.

It is the fourth time in five seasons under head coach Bill Broderick that the Captains will be appearing in the NCAA Tournament, and the 18th in program history. The Captains last hosted NCAA Tournament games during the 2013 postseason, also hosting the first and second rounds.
