Four-for-Four! CNU Golf Blows Away Competition For Record-Setting Fourth Straight CAC Championship

Complete Tournament Scores

CAPE CHARLES, Va. -- With a record-shattering 55-stroke victory, the Christopher Newport men's golf program won a Capital Athletic Conference record fourth consecutive league title on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore David Rabil (+5) edged out teammate Joey Corlett (+7) for conference champion honors, as all five Captains finished in the top ten, earning All-Conference honors.

With the victory, the Christopher Newport Captains will represent the CAC with the automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championships from May 16-19. The Captains will travel to Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. to play at the Mission Inn Resort, making the program's 11th all-time appearance in the national championship event. It is the second time CNU will represent the CAC after earning the league's first ever automatic berth last season.

The win came in colossal fashion, as CNU finished the 54-hole event with an 898, good for 34-over par. Second place Mary Washington trailed CNU by 54 strokes at the conclusion of the event, shattering the previous mark for margin of victory by a gargantuan 23 strokes. The previous record was held by CNU in the 2015 tournament, when the Captains won by 31 strokes. CNU signed for a three-day line of 292-301-305, becoming the first team in league history to capture four titles.

CNU captured the top three spots on the individual leaderboard, led by conference champion David Rabil. The sophomore earned his fourth win of the season as he continues to put the finishing touches on arguably the finest overall season in program history. On Sunday, he registered a one-over 73 and hoisted the individual medalist honors behind a three-day total of 221 (72-76-73). The five-over score is the lowest in CAC Championship history for a 54-hole tournament, and tied for fourth best all-time since the league began sponsoring golf in 2008.

With the individual medalist honors, Rabil was also named the league's Conference Player of the Year. The sophomore is the fourth straight Captain to earn the honor.

Finishing second was Rabil's sophomore classmate, Joey Corlett, who finished the day with a five-over 77 to finish at 223 (75-71-77). Corlett, who won Rookie of the Year honors at Bay Creek in 2015, put together a sensational run on the back nine with four birdies and a par over a stretch of five holes.  The surge helped put him atop of the tournament scoring chart for Par 5's and tied with teammate Harry Nodwell for the most birdies scored in the three-day event.

Speaking of Nodwell, the senior capped his final appearance in the CAC Tournament with a third place finish at eight-over. He collects his third straight first team All-Conference designation after shooting 224 (72-74-78). The veteran put together an extremely clean round with 14 pars, including a run of 11 straight between 7-17.

Rabil, Corlett, and Nodwell all earned first team All-Conference honors with their dominance at the top of the leaderboard. Also earning second team All-Conference honors were rookie Davis Topping (+17) and senior Charlie Peavley (+19). Topping finished in eighth place with a 233 (73-80-80) and Peavley earned his second All-Conference designation tied for ninth with a 235 (76-82-77).

Head coach Jamie Coleman also secured his fourth straight CAC Coach of the Year designation. The Captains' guide has now led CNU to five conference titles in nine years as head coach, with four NCAA appearances as a team.
