Day 1 Results // Live Results

GENEVA, Ohio --
Jeff Dover broke the school and conference record in the 1500, while Brendon Burrows registered a top-10 effort in the men's discus to highlight a well-balanced effort by the Christopher Newport track & field teams on the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

In the prelims of the 1500, Dover punched his ticket to the finals with a record-setting run. During the event, he cruised to a time of 3:49.81, which topped the previous school standard of 3:50.42 set by Dan Pittman in 1985. The 1500 mark was the third-oldest men's track & field record at CNU before Dover added his name to the top of the list.

Along with Dover, Zach Campbell also qualified for the finals of the 1500 after crossing the line in 3:50.90. That clocking marked the sixth-fastest time in the prelims, earning him a place alongside Dover in the finals, which will take place on Saturday at 12:35 p.m.

Meanwhile, in field events, Burrows starred in the discus. Unleashing a 46.42-meter throw, he placed ninth in the nation, falling just shy of All-American status. Overall, his ninth-place finish stands as the second-best in program history. William Sanderlin is CNU's only other top-10 performer in the men's discus after he placed seventh during the 1988 outdoor championships.

In addition to Burrows, Legend Boyesen came in 20th in the discus with a 38.79-meter effort.

Also adding the finishing touches on their 2017 campaigns, Grayson Reid came in 19th in the 10,000 after crossing the line in 31:56.49, while Logan Harrington placed 21st in the women's 1500 with a 4:45.50 clocking. Additionally, Ryan Scott finished 16th in the 200 in 21.96. The junior speedster will return to the track for the prelims of the 110-hurdles on Friday at 2:30 p.m.

Rounding out Thursday's competitors, Briana Sutton finished off the first day of the heptathlon in ninth place with 2,689 points. During the combined event, the senior notched the second-best throw in the shot put with an 11.48-meter toss. She also tied for eighth in the high jump after clearing 1.55 meters and posted times of 15.72 in the 100-hurdles and 27.95 in the 200.

Sutton will continue the heptathlon tomorrow with the long jump beginning at 11:30 a.m. Additionally, Tyler Robin and Hannah Shoemaker will take part in the women's shot put at 1:30 p.m., while Wesley Shrieves will begin his quest for high jump supremacy at the same time.

Also hitting the track on Friday, Scott and Jordan Roach will run in the 110-hurdle prelims at 2:30 p.m., and Campbell will head out for the 800 at 4:00 p.m.
