Complete CoSIDA Release with All-District Teams
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport junior outfielder
Craig Johnson was named a 2017 Academic All-District selection on Thursday afternoon, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). One of the Captains' top offensive players this season, Johnson becomes the first CNU baseball player in program history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, while adding to the University's record number of selections across the board in 2016-17.
Johnson is the sixth student-athlete to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors this academic year, slipping by last year's record five picks. The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The Academic All-District teams include student-athletes from eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. First team Academic All-District honorees, like Johnson, advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team ballot, where first-, second-, and third-team All-America honorees will be announced on May 31.
The Captains' third-year outfielder carried a 3.83 cumulative GPA into the spring season, majoring in Biochemistry. Aspiring to go to medical school and become a doctor after his undergraduate career at CNU, Johnson is a two-time Academic All-Conference selection and is in line to make it three-for-three this year when the Capital Athletic Conference announces the team this summer.
The 6-3, 200-pound right fielder started 35 of 37 games played this season, ranking second on the team in hitting with a .363 average. He delivered 12 extra-base hits, including three home runs, while driving in 24 runs and scoring 33 teams, also ranking second on the team. Johnson led the team in on-base percentage with a .458 clip powered by 45 hits and 21 walks, while finishing the year with 65 total bases. He was also a dangerous outfielder defensively, showing off an impressive arm in the outfield with a pair of assists.
The Chesterfield, Va. native has registered a .353 career average through his first three seasons with 56 runs scored, 36 RBI, and 19 extra-base hits.
This season, the CNU offense, led in part by Johnson's efforts, ranked among the league's best and helped the Captains run off 13 straight wins and move back into the Top 25. The Captains finished the year with a 25-15 overall record including a 15-4 mark in conference play.
