NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - More men's basketball post-season honors were handed out Friday, and Christopher Newport's
John Krikorian and
Aaron McFarland received statewide recognition. Krikorian was selected the Virginia Coach of the Year and McFarland was named first team All-State by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID).
Krikorian, who recently completed his eighth season leading the Captains, receives the honor for the third straight year. He was also selected the Coach of the Year in the Capital Athletic Conference this season for the third straight year. He has led CNU to the NCAA Tournament the last three seasons and five total times in his eight-year tenure. He led the Captains to a 22-7 overall record and a 14-4 CAC mark as well as a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2017-2018.
McFarland was selected first team All-America by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) shortly after the season concluded. A product of Richmond, McFarland was the Player of the Year in the Capital Athletic Conference this season and was named the Middle Atlantic Region Player of the Year. A sharp-shooting guard, McFarland led the Captains in scoring this season and recorded 502 points for an average of 17.3 per game. He poured in a career-high 35 points in CNU's victory over Mary Washington in the CAC semi-finals, and led the squad in scoring 15 times. He set new school records for three-point field goals (266) and games played (118), and was the top free throw shooter in CNU history, making 86 percent of his attempts and converting on his last 29 at the charity stripe.
McFarland, a graduate of Massaponax High School, is the ninth-leading scorer in CNU men's basketball history, concluding his career with 1,552 points. He was a part of the most successful senior class in program history, leading the Captains to a 99-20 record over the last four seasons and helping the Captains advance to the NCAA Tournament the last three years. CNU reached the Final Four, Sweet 16, and second round over the last three years. McFarland played in the Reese's Senior All-Star game prior to the National Championship game in Salem, and scored 16 points.
