WINNECONNE, Wisc. -- Monica Lannen and
Joey Lightbody both finished in the top-100 of their respective races to lead the Christopher Newport cross country teams on Saturday afternoon during UW-Oshkosh's Kollege Town Sports Invitational at the Lake Breeze Golf Club.
Competing on the same course that will host the national championships next month, CNU held strong against a decorated collection of nationally-ranked competition. The men's team eventually finished 21st in the Pre-National 8k, which featured 17 squads listed in the latest USTFCCCA National Poll. Meanwhile, the women placed 27th in the 6k, which also included 17 nationally-ranked opponents.
On an individual level, Lightbody posted the top finish after coming in 52nd in the 8k with a time of 26:07.3. Later,
Daniel Cretney and
Cavanaugh McGaw just missed top-100 efforts. Cretney came in 104th (26:32.1), while McGaw placed 106th (26:33.5).
Rounding out the squad's top-five,
Jason Putnam finished 140th in 26:51.8, while
Calvin Miller crossed in 27:15.9.
On the women's side, Lannen led the Captains after finishing 92nd in the 6k. The junior standout crossed the line in 23:42.4. Also running sub-25 times,
Samantha Dickerson came in 133rd (24:09.0),
Jessica Lee was 152nd (24:18.3), and freshman
Logan Funk was 167th (24:28.2).
Capping off the CNU contingent in the women's race,
Kellie Hyde completed the course in 25:18.2, while
Natalie Prye finished in 25:42.1.
Along with the team competitions,
Nick Tolarchyk ran a strong race in the Open 8k. The freshman finished 91st in the field with a 27:56.1 clocking.
Christopher Newport will return to action on October 27 when the Captains contend for league supremacy at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships in Buena Vista, Virginia.
