BUENA VISTA, Va. --
Four Captains registered top-10 efforts, including a pair of third-place finishes, as the Christopher Newport men's cross country team came in second at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships, while the women finished third during the title meet on Saturday afternoon at the Vista Links Golf Course.

On the men's side, the Captains finished with a score of 51, which fell just two points shy of York (Pa.) for the top spot. On the women's side, Christopher Newport secured 69 points to finish third overall. The Spartans also won the women's title, while Mary Washington was the runner-up.

Leading the way, Monica Lannen and Joey Lightbody both collected third-place finishes in their respective races. Lannen came in third in the women's 6k with a time of 24:06.4. Meanwhile, Lightbody matched that finish in the men's 8k after crossing the line in 26:39.7.

Equally impressive on Saturday, Clark Edwards was the top freshman in the men's race. The first-year speedster led all newcomers with a seventh-place showing in 27:01.2. Later, four veterans followed Edwards with top-20 performances. Daniel Cretney came in 11th (27:10.7), Cavanaugh McGaw was 12th (27:17.0), Jason Putnam placed 18th (27:40.7), and Michael Carrico rounded out the leaders in 19th (27:45.1).

Capping off the men's top-seven, Trejon Edmonds just missed the top-20 after crossing the line in 27:55.1, which placed him 21st in the field.

Along with Lannen in the women's 6k, three other standouts finished in the top-15. Samantha Dickerson was 10th in 24:46.4, while Jessica Lee came in 13th (24:53.3). Headlining the freshman contingent, Logan Funk rounded out the top-finishers after placing 15th in 25:09.7.

Among the rest of the team's top-seven, Kellie Hyde was 30th (26:11.5), Natalie Prye was 35th (26:34.8), and Isabel Hogg came in 39th (26:47.9). Fellow freshmen Magdalena Ralston and Alexis Smith also joined Hogg and Funk in the top-50. Ralston was 41st overall in 26:52.4, while Smith was 45th in 27:10.5.

Christopher Newport will return to action on November 10 when the Captains continue championship action with the NCAA South / Southeast Regionals in Rome, Georgia.
