FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Clark Edwards has been named the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week after putting together a historic debut for Christopher Newport during the Holiday Open on Sunday at the Freeman Center.
During the competition, the freshman made his mark in the mile. Beating a field that included runners from all levels of the NCAA, Edwards posted a victory with a time of 4:20.05. Just one meet into his collegiate career, he already ranks 10th on the program's all-time performance list in that event.
In addition to ranking 10th in CNU history, Edwards' time also places him at the top of the NCAA leaderboards this year. His clocking is nearly two seconds faster than the next closest mark in the country.
Along with his performance in the mile, Edwards also ran the second leg on Christopher Newport's top 4x400-relay unit on Sunday. The foursome eventually finished the race in 3:27.30, which ranks 11th in the NCAA this year.
While Sunday's showcase was an impressive start to his indoor track career, Edwards has already starred for the Captains in 2018. In the fall, the first-year phenom excelled on the cross country team. The Ashburn, Virginia native was named the CAC Rookie of the Year and hauled in first-team All-League accolades for his performance.
Edwards and the rest of his teammates will return to action next month when CNU takes part in the VMI Keydet Invitational in Lexington beginning on January 18.
