Final Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Kicking off the season in style, the Christopher Newport track & field teams pieced together several historic efforts on Sunday as the Captains excelled during the Holiday Open at the Freeman Center.
Leading the way, three Captains notched all-time efforts in distance events. In the women's 5000,
Jessica Lee placed third overall after crossing the line in 18:36.47. That marked the sixth-fastest clocking in CNU history.
On the men's side, a pair of freshmen also added their names to the history books.
Clark Edwards won the mile in 4:20.05, which stands as the 10th-best mark in program history. Meanwhile,
Adam Wosahla notched a mark of 1:56.31 in the 800, which moved him to ninth on the school's all-time performance list.
Fellow first-year standout
Peyton Blanding also made her presence felt in her collegiate debut. The freshman eclipsed 2.95 meters in the pole vault, which stands ninth all-time at CNU.
"By and large, solid performances all around," said head coach
Tyler Wingard, whose squad registered 15 total PRs during the competition. "The team competed well and did a pretty good job of executing the elements we have been training so far. We have a lot to build on heading into January, and I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the pieces come together in the new year."
Along with the history-makers,
Cavanaugh McGaw won the 800 in 1:55.60, while
Ian Dors placed fifth overall in 2:00.99. In the mile,
Jason Putnam followed Edwards with a fourth-place performance after completing the race in 4:26.51.
In other distance events,
Logan Funk and
Joey Lightbody also walked away with victories on Sunday. Funk won the women's mile in 5:25.72, just edging teammate
Monica Lannen by a hundredth of a second. Additionally, Lightbody captured the men's 3000 with an 8:49.27 clocking.
Among other top performers in men's track events,
Kurt Waller was third in the 200 (22.71) and sixth in the long jump (5.93 meters),
Jeremiah Bethea was fourth in the pole vault (3.90 meters), and
Sam Johnson came in sixth in the weight throw (13.15 meters).
On the women's side,
Sarah Johnson notched a pair of top-five showings after coming in third in the weight throw (14.45 meters) and fourth in the shot put (11.53 meters). Meanwhile,
Jessica Brownell was the runner-up in the pole vault (3.10 meters),
Paige Travers and
Trinity Barksdale tied for the third-best distance in the long jump (4.69 meters), and
Lauryn Helstrom was fourth in the high jump (1.47 meters). Lannen also came in fourth in the 800 (2:27.33) in addition to her second-place showing in the mile.
Christopher Newport will return to action on January 18 for the start of the two-day VMI Keydet Invitational in Lexington, Virginia.
