NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Following a lengthy layoff, the Christopher Newport cross country teams will return to action with a busy Saturday as the Captains will send a group of competitors to the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and another contingent to the Don Cathcart Invitational in Salisbury, Maryland.
At the Paul Short Run, the men will head out on the Goodman Cross Country Course for the 8k at 11 a.m., while the women will take part in the 6k at 1 p.m. At Winter Place Park in Maryland, the Don Cathcart Invitational opens with the women's 6k at 9:45 a.m. before the men run the 8k at 10:30 a.m.
Entering the weekend, the men are currently ranked 28th in the country and third in the region. Meanwhile, the women are slotted ninth in the South / Southeast.
Saturday's action will mark the first time the Captains have competed since the Mary Washington Opener on August 31. The squad had a meet canceled at William & Mary earlier this month due to Hurricane Florence.
During the squad's lone action of the year,
Monica Lannen posted a victory on the women's side at Mary Washington while leading Christopher Newport to a first-place finish in the team standings. She was honored as the CAC Athlete of the Week for that performance. Additionally,
Logan Funk,
Samantha Dickerson, and
MacKenzie Garner also added top-10 efforts in the 4k during that competition.
On the men's side, CNU also placed first in the team standings led by a slew of top-flight performances.
Joey Lightbody led the way and came in third overall with a time of 15:27.7 in the 5k.
Cavanaugh McGaw and
Clark Edwards also finished in the top-five, while
Jason Putnam and
Daniel Cretney notched top-10 efforts as well.
Following Saturday's slate, Christopher Newport will return to action on October 6 when the Captains host the CNU Invitational at Lee Hall Mansion.
