FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Monica Lannen has been named the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week after starring in the mile during the Keydet Invitational on Saturday at VMI's Corps Physical Training Center.
The weekly CAC honor is the fourth of her career and the second this year. Lannen was previously celebrated as the CAC Cross Country Athlete of the Week on September 5 after earning a pair of track awards on March 27 and April 3 of last year.
In her first action of 2019, Lannen kicked off the year in fine fashion. The junior led all Division III competitors and finished 10th overall in the mile at the Keydet Invitational after completing Saturday's race in 5:15.05. That clocking established a new PR and moved her to sixth on the program's all-time performance list.
Along with placing her among the program's elite runners, Lannen's time also stands as the fastest clocking in the CAC and South / Southeast Region this year. It is over seven seconds faster than the next closest mark in the conference and half a tick better than the second-best time in the region.
The weekly award continues a decorated junior campaign for the Reston, Virginia native after she was previously celebrated as an All-Conference and All-Region performer for her work in cross country. Lannen is also a four-time defending CAC champion in track after claiming the indoor 800 and mile as well as the outdoor 800 and 1500 last year.
Lannen and her teammates will return to action on Friday for the start of the two-day Captains Invitational & Combined Events at the Freeman Center.
