Abby Asuncion Receives Second CAC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week Award

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- For the second time this season, Abby Asuncion has been named the Capital Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after putting together a historic showcase during a pair of victories for the 13th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team.

Helping lead the Captains to wins over CAC rivals Southern Virginia and York (Pa.), Asuncion scored a pair of goals in both tilts. She opened the scoring in each contest and was credited with the game-winning strike against both squads during the week.

Previously, Asuncion was honored as the CAC Offensive Player of the Week on October 14. Making a little history with her second award, she is just the fourth freshman in league history to secure a pair of weekly honors. She adds her name to an exclusive list featuring former Christopher Newport All-Americans Bailey Lien (2013) and Brittan Muir (2015) as well as Mary Washington standout Lauren Hopkins (2016). Hopkins was the only previous freshman to earn a pair Offensive Player of the Week accolades after Lien and Muir were celebrated for their efforts on the other side of the field.

Kicking off her award-winning week on Wednesday, Asuncion wasted little time getting on the board against Southern Virginia. The Sterling, Virginia native found the back of the cage just two minutes into regulation on a dart from the doorstep. Later, she came back with the squad's fourth tally on a deflection along the right post to help carry the Captains to an 8-0 victory.

Three days later, Asuncion came back with two more goals during a 5-1 win at York (Pa.). Once again, she got the action started quickly after capitalizing on a backhand bullet just three minutes into the contest. Coming back for more in the second half, she wrapped up the scoring in the 56th minute after finishing off a rapid-fire run that put the final punctuation mark on the victory.

Adding her name to the history books with her efforts during the week, Asuncion became just the third freshman in program history to register back-to-back multi-goal outings, joining Belle Tunstall (2011) and Annie Gehring (2005). Meanwhile, she also established a new single-season record for points in conference action after bumping her team-leading total to 16 this year. That eclipsed the previous standard of 12, which was set by Tunstall in 2013 and matched by Courtnie Greene in 2017.

Overall this year, Asuncion ranks second in the CAC with 12 goals and fifth with 24 points. Both of those totals also place her second on Christopher Newport's all-time freshman lists. Gehring owns both marks after collecting 13 goals and 29 points during her debut campaign in 2005.

Asuncion and the rest of her teammates will return to action on Wednesday when the Captains wrap up the regular season with a 5 p.m. contest at St. Mary's (Md.).
