NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Guided by their efforts both on and off the field,
Dylan Rice,
Scott McAneney, and
Max Wayne have been named men's lacrosse team captains as the three standouts will lead Christopher Newport into the upcoming 2020 campaign.
Forming the core of the squad's veteran leadership, Rice has been selected as the team captain, while McAneney and Wayne have been named assistant team captains. Rice and McAneney also served as captains during the 2019 campaign.
"These three guys know what is required to be great," said head coach
Mikey Thompson. "They are competitors, and they elevate the level of play of everyone around them. We have a hungry group this year, and I am confident that these guys will set the tone on a daily basis."
Entering his third year with the program, Rice has already established himself as one of the most lethal offensive threats in school history. Through two seasons, he ranks third all-time with 108 goals and 145 points. A decorated standout, he is a two-time All-Conference and All-State selection, while he picked up honorable mention All-American honors for his work last season.
"Dylan showed up this fall bigger, faster, and stronger than last spring," said Thompson. "His work ethic and competitive drive is what makes him such a special leader. He wants to be the best for his teammates and do big things together."
While Rice has been lighting up opponents, McAneney has been slamming the door on the opposition. Entering his senior campaign, the fourth-year goalkeeper has scattered his name throughout the record books. He currently ranks third in school history with 382 total saves, while his .560 save percentage stands as the finest mark by a Captain. For his efforts, he is a two-time All-State selection and picked up All-Conference and All-American accolades in 2019.
"Scott has a unique way of making everyone around him play loose and confident," said Thompson. "He was on fire for the entirety of the 2019 season, and that has carried over into his senior year. He is the leader of our defense and one of the most talented goalies I have ever coached."
Equally effective on the defensive side of the ball, Wayne has been a stalwart on the back line for the Captains. Frustrating the opposition, the junior has 80 caused turnovers in his career, which places him fifth on the all-time charts. A two-time All-State and All-League selection, he also nabbed All-American nods during a standout sophomore campaign in which he ranked ninth in the NCAA with 51 caused turnovers.
"Max is another tireless worker who holds himself and his teammates to an extremely high standard," said Thompson. "He is meticulous in his preparation and has become a nightmare for opposing attackmen."
Christopher Newport is coming off of a 2019 season in which the program was a mainstay in the USILA National Coaches Poll. The Captains eventually wrapped up the year with a 12-7 record and an appearance in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament.
