KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Three Christopher Newport women's soccer players earned Scholar All-Region accolades on Monday afternoon as announced by the United Soccer Coaches association. Seniors
Carson Pokorny and
Shaye Doherty each collected first team All-South Region accolades while junior
Haley Eiser added a second team selection.
It is the first time in program history that three players were honored as Scholar All-South Region picks and Pokorny becomes just the second player to earn the distinction more than once in her career. She joins
Gabby Gillis as a repeat selection as both were tabbed first team Scholar All-Region midfielders a year ago.
The United Soccer Coaches, formerly known as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), honored the trio of Christopher Newport Captains in the South Region where 12 players earned first team honors and 35 total student-athletes were recognized across three teams. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA while also starting more than 50 percent of games as an elite player as supported by playing honors or contributions to the success of her team.
Pokorny headlines the grouping after becoming the first player in program history to earn first team CoSIDA Academic All-American honors twice in her career. The senior midfielder earned first team Scholar All-Region honors for the second straight year after once again helping lead one of the nation's most dangerous offenses in 2019. She carries a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA through her first three years while studying toward a degree in Biochemistry. Pokorny was the only student-athlete on the Scholar All-South Region first team with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
She has already been accepted to medical school and aspires to become a doctor in the future. In addition to Monday's selection, Pokorny has been named a three-time Academic All-Conference selection, three-time first team CoSIDA Academic All-District pick, and a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American. She also earned the NCAA Elite 90 award at the 2018 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships as the participant with the highest GPA and was named to the 2018-19 VaSID All-State Academic Team. While excelling in the classroom, Pokorny also set the program record in assists, with 32, and started 20 of 21 games played on the outside of the midfield for the Captains in her senior season.
Joining Pokorny on the first team was fellow senior
Shaye Doherty, a consistent presence on the record-breaking Captains defense over the last four years. Doherty earned her first career distinction as a Scholar All-Region student-athlete when she was tabbed one of four defenders to pick up a spot on the first team. Doherty posted a 3.70 cumulative GPA while majoring in Accounting and is a three-time CAC All-Academic Team selection.
Doherty helped anchor a back line that set a program record for goals-against average in a season with an impressive 0.53 mark to rank 21st nationally. Over the course of her career, the Captains defense has been one of the best in the country with Doherty a consistent factor with 81 starts and 86 career games played to rank among the best in program history.
Rounding out the Scholar All-Region selections was second team goalkeeper
Haley Eiser, who helped Doherty post the record-breaking single season defensive numbers. With Eiser playing over 1,922 minutes and starting all 22 games this season, the Captains posted a program record 15 shutouts. Her 0.56 GAA and 85.5% save percentage are the best single season marks in Christopher Newport women's soccer history as Eiser was the goalkeeper of record in all 22 games played.
Eiser was an All-Region selection as a sophomore and followed up her successful breakout campaign with another strong performance in her third year. She was a second team All-Conference pick and has been named to the Capital Athletic Conference All-Academic Team in each of her first two seasons. The Richmond, Va. native boasts a 3.79 cumulative GPA while majoring in Mathematics.
This season, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team went 16-3-3 and reached the NCAA Tournament second round for the fourth consecutive year. It was the first time in program history the team reached the postseason in four straight seasons as the senior class made history with an at-large berth into the 2019 NCAA Division III Championship. The Captains defeated Worcester State in the opening round, 2-0, before falling to Johns Hopkins on the road in the second round.
