NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The Christopher Newport track & field teams will contend for conference supremacy beginning on Friday at the Freeman Center when the Captains host the Capital Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.

Action gets underway on Friday at 4 p.m. with the start of the men's high jump and weight throw as well as the women's long jump. Track events open with men's 5000 at 4:30 p.m. Saturday kicks off at 10 a.m. with the start of both track and field disciplines, including the men's mile and triple jump and the women's high jump and shot put.

Overall, men's and women's conference champions will be crowned in 16 events during the two-day competition.

For those fans unable to attend the meet, live results and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.

The women enter the meet looking to claim their sixth consecutive indoor championship. The Captains welcome back a pair of reigning conference champions, including Monica Lannen. The junior distance standout won the 800 and mile during last year's indoor meet and currently boasts the top time in both events entering this year's competition. Hannah Bowden also snatched the 2018 high jump crown and comes into Friday ranked first in the league in the 60-hurdles.

Along with the defending champions, Sarah Johnson was the runner-up in both the shot put and weight throw last year. Meanwhile, Samantha Dickerson sports the league's fastest 5000 clocking this season, Peyton Blanding and Jessica Brownell sit among the top-three in the pole vault, and Lauryn Helstrom is third in the high jump.

On the men's side, the Captains have won the previous three indoor crowns. Last season, Kurt Waller and Cavanaugh McGaw helped lead CNU to the team title after finishing second in two events apiece. Waller was the runner-up in both the 200 and 400 at the 2018 championships, while McGaw placed second in the 800 and mile.

Building upon his performance last year, Waller ranks first in the conference in both the 200 and 400 this season. Additionally, Clark Edwards has the league's top clocking in the 800, and Christopher Newport also boasts the CAC's top Distance Medley Relay. Among other performers, Brandon Berry ranks among the top-10 in the 60, 200, and 400, while McGaw and Adam Wosahla round out the top-three in the 800.
