Men's Basketball Receives Three Statewide Honors as Carter, Aigner, and Krikorian are Recognized

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport's men's basketball team received three honors on Wednesday from the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). The organization released its statewide post-season accolades, and Marcus Carter of the Captains was named first team, Jason Aigner was selected second team, and Head Coach John Krikorian was voted Coach of the Year in the commonwealth.

CNU advanced to the Final Four of the Division III NCAA Tournament for the second time in the 52-year history of the program, and concluded the season with a 29-4 overall record.

Carter, a fifth-year senior from Williamsburg, enjoyed an illustrious career as a Captain and finished fourth on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,834 points. He scored a team-high 17.1 points per game and also led the Captains in rebounding with 7.1 per contest. It's his third VaSID state honor, and second first team designation.

Carter was a second team All-America selection from D3hoops.com and a first team All-Conference selection this year in the Capital Athletic Conference, and was also named All-Region in the Mid-Atlantic. This year marked Carter's second All-American honor from D3hoops.com and fourth overall. Carter became just the fourth men's basketball standout to receive All-American honors two times from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), joining CNU greats Lamont Strothers, Steve Artis, and Antoine Sinclair as two-time honorees. Carter was selected first team All-American by the NABC following his sophomore season in 2015-16, when he led the Captains to a 30-2 record and the program's first trip ever to the Final Four. He became the first sophomore in program history to achieve All-American status.

Aigner, a sophomore from Fairfax, set a new CNU mark for three-point field goals in a season this year with 117. It's the first statewide honor for Aigner, who was a second team All-Conference selection this year in the CAC. Aigner averaged 15.2 points per game and was 117 of 269 from beyond the three-point line for a shooting percentage of .435 from long range.

Krikorian, who concluded his ninth year leading the Captains, was voted Coach of the Year in the state for the fourth consecutive year. He was also named the Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the fourth straight season after leading the Captains back to the NCAA Division III Final Four for the second time in four seasons.

Christopher Newport received its highest final season ranking ever, as D3Hoops.com placed the Captains third in the country in its final national poll. CNU fell in the semifinals to Swarthmore in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and won four NCAA games to advance to the national semifinals. The 29 victories marks the second-highest total in school history, and the Captains recorded an 18-0 record this year at the Freeman Center.

Christopher Newport won both the regular and post-season titles in the Capital Athletic Conference, and won 13 straight games before losing in the national semifinals.

VaSID names 29 all-state teams in 16 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership to VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a University or conference in the state of Virginia.
