Live Scoring
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- After the first of three rounds at the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championships, the 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport women's golf team is sitting in second place with an opening round 345 (+57). The York College of Pennsylvania Spartans lead the way after firing a 329 (+41).Â
Scoring conditions were tough on the Green Course at the Golden Horsehoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. as an eight-over par 80 leads the individual leaderboard. Mary Washington's Andrea Dill signed for that score as none of the 20 golfers in the tournament managed a score in the 70's on day one.Â
All five of CNU's representatives are in the top 11, including a fifth-place effort from sophomore
Katie Thome (+12) after the first 18 holes. Thome started strong with three pars and four even holes in the first six to lead the way for the Captains. She finished six-over on the front and matched that score on the back nine to card an 84 in the opening round.Â
Finishing just one stroke behind her classmate was sophomore
Erica Whitehouse (+13), who registered one of only eight total birdies scored by the field on Thursday when she dropped in a four on the 473-yard Par 5 15th hole. She added six pars in her opening round and was exceptional on the short holes, scoring +1 after four Par 3's.Â
Also carding birdies in the round were rookie
Shreya Ganta (+14) and sophomore
Cameron Cook (+18), who finished eighth and 10th, respectively. Ganta birdied the 141-yard Par 3 17th hole and Cook knocked in a two on the 153-yard Par 3 11th.
Harper Lurie (+19) rounded out CNU's performance with an 11th place showing on the first day after firing a 91.Â
Tee times for Friday's second round are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Live stats will be available online at CNUsports.com.Â
