NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Several Captains pieced together historic efforts on Saturday afternoon as the Christopher Newport track & field teams excelled during the Captains Classic, which was hosted at POMOCO Stadium.
After the meet was delayed a day due to inclement weather in Hampton Roads, CNU looked well rested and quickly went to work on the record books. Headlining the standouts, freshman
Clark Edwards won the 800 in 1:52.40, which moved him to fifth on the program's all-time charts. On the women's side,
Logan Funk completed the same distance in 2:21.47. That clocking bumped her to 10th in program history.
In other events,
Sarah Johnson continued her historic run just a week after setting a new school record in the discus. This time, the senior made her mark in the hammer after landing a 40.91-meter effort, which ranks 10th all-time at CNU. Meanwhile,
Kurt Waller also climbed the charts in the men's 200 after crossing the line in 21.78. That places him eighth in school history.
Along with his starring role in the 200, Waller also won the 400 in 48.28. Also claiming victories on Saturday,
Allan Pedin captured the men's pole vault after topping 3.95 meters, while
Adrianna DeSantis and
Monica Lannen added victories on the women's side. DeSantis placed first in the 200 with a 27.12 clocking, while Lannen won the 1500 in 4:54.36. Following Lannen,
Kaitlyn Ardrey was just a few ticks behind as the freshman placed second in 4:54.69.
Among other top finishers on the women's side,
Peyton Blanding was the runner-up in the pole vault (3.10 meters),
Jessica Lee was second in the 5000 (19:13.64), and Johnson added a second-place effort in the discus (41.15 meters).
Kellie Hyde also came through with a pair of fourth-place showings in the 800 (2:26.12) and the 1500 (4:59.72), while
Lauryn Helstrom and
Jai McHugh tied for the third-best clearance in the high jump (1.40 meters).
On the men's side,
Jason Putnam came in second in the 5000 with a time of 15:13.60, while
Sam Johnson was the runner-up in the hammer after launching a 40.75-meter toss. That effort highlighted a strong overall showing by the CNU throwers as
Jared Vaughn also came in third in the hammer (33.14 meters), while
Amir Siders was fifth in the discus (36.99).
"The conditions ended up being mostly good - several wind-aided results, but nothing extreme," said head coach
Tyler Wingard, whose athletes registered 26 PRs during the competition. "The discus throwers were hindered a bit, so their strong performances were even better than the numbers. Overall, it was a really good day, and the team managed the meet's glitches well, so I was really pleased with their focus all around."
The meet will wrap up tomorrow with the conclusion of the combined events. Currently,
Zoe Stauffer sits in third in the heptathlon after accumulating 2448 points during the first day of action.
