2019 D3baseball.com All-Americans
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport seniors
Seth Woodard and
Joseph Cutchins were named D3baseball.com All-Americans on Tuesday morning in the 13th annual release by the national website. Cutchins collects his first career All-American designation with a spot on the third team and Woodard became the first ever Captain to twice earn D3baseball.com All-American honors when he was tabbed a fourth team selection.Â
D3baseball.com has been releasing All-Americans since 2007 and Woodard is the first Captain to be honored more than once in his career. Cutchins is the eighth player in program history to earn the postseason accolade and the first second baseman since Matt Shoemaker in 2011.Â
The first team All-Region second baseman started the year as a late-inning defensive replacement in right field, but ended the year boasting one of the hottest bats in one of the most dangerous lineups in Division III. Cutchins hit .406 in 133 at-bats this season, ranking in the top-ten in program history. He drove in 50 runs and scored 46 times while leading the team in slugging with a .707 mark.Â
The Goochland, Va. native went hitless in back-to-back games only once after moving into the starting lineup at the keystone, and put together one of the most consistent offensive seasons in CNU history. He launched a pair of pinch hit grand slams early in the year and delivered 15 multi-hit and 11 multi-RBI performances over the course of the season. Punctuating his strong season, Cutchins logged one of the finest individual game performances in the 2019 CAC Championship Game to help propel CNU to their first title since joining the league. Against Penn State Harrisburg, Cutchins was 3-for-4 with 9 RBI, 2 HR, 1 2B, and 3 runs scored. The nine runs driven in rank tied for the second most in a single game in CNU history.Â
Cutchins was pegged a third team All-American after hitting 9 home runs with 13 doubles. He added strong defense at second base, with just three errors and a .979 fielding percentage.Â
Becoming just the second player in CNU baseball history to earn multiple All-American accolades, Woodard joins Matt Turner (2002, 2003) in the exclusive club. While hitting second for the potent Christopher Newport offense, Woodard hit .323 with a team-leading 64 runs scored, tying a program record and ranking third nationally this season. He also tied for fifth nationally in RBI by driving in 61 runs, becoming just the second player in program lore to post a pair of 60+ RBI seasons. More impressively, Woodard did it in his only two seasons wearing a Captains uniform after transferring into CNU prior to his junior campaign.Â
The first team All-Region third baseman was a first team ABCA All-American last season while also collecting third team D3baseball.com All-American plaudits. This year, he earned a spot on the fourth team after polishing off one of the best two-year tenures in the history of CNU baseball. Showcasing one of the nation's most disciplined eyes, Woodard walked 59 times to lead the country and rank tied for 10th all-time in Division III baseball. His patience at the plate helped build a .523 on-base percentage, ranked 20th nationally.Â
Woodard pounded out 26 extra-base hits including 11 home runs and was one of only four players to start all 45 games this season for the Captains.Â
The two CNU All-Americans helped the Captains win the program's first CAC Championship and led the team back to the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in history. Christopher Newport went 35-10 and shattered offensive records throughout the season, including topping 500 runs for the first time while averaging the sixth most runs per game in the history of Division III baseball.Â
